Hemp and Biosolids Field Research

A collaborative research project between the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, officially titled "Evaluating Environmental Benefits of Growing Hemp with Biosolids." Using Flura seed, it tests industrial hemp grain and fiber production under Class A biosolid amendment against a standard urea control.

Plot size: approximately 1/8 acre per plot
Measured: fiber and grain yield, soil carbon sequestration, and PFAS absorption
Early observation: hemp grown with biosolids appears taller, with thicker stalks, than the urea control

The first harvest and analysis were completed in late 2025. The trial will be replicated in 2026 to validate results and support peer-reviewed publication.
